This study aimed to extract the weakness of character education(CE) in early childhood services such as kindergartens and childcare centers and suggest the strategies to improve the educational programs in the context of reducing bullying in school years.
The major contents of this study are to manifest the concept of CE and its necessity, to research policies to activate CE in Korea and other countries, to develop the conceptual model of CE’, to investigate the current status of CE in kindergartens and childcare centers and in families, and to suggest some strategies to improve CE in early childhood in relation to reducing school bullying based on the results of the research.
The research methods for this study are reviewing literacies for the conceptual work of the model-development, searching vis internet and phone- calling to collect current data on policy-items of CE in all cities and provinces, surveying on current status of CE in early childhood through 1004 directors of the kindergartens and childcare centers and parents, doing case-studies of superior program in early childhood institutes, and meeting professors, directors, teachers and governmental officials.
Based on all the results from the case studies, surveys, and other methods, we suggested the strategies for the conclusion. The following ideas are some of the major strategies: a) to provide the directors and teachers with more opportunities of education on teaching CE, b) to provide more information on professional programs dealing with children who show severe violence and other social problems, c) to develop materials for CE in early childhood and let the care and education sectors share them actively.
