Abstract

The Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) is an extensive nationwide longitudinal study which serves as a long-term research undertaking on children’s development. The PSKC starts from the birth of children born in 2008 and, based on a multi-faceted and complex study design, the study takes children and their growth environment into consideration. By providing horizontal data of the age group and vertical data according to time changes, the PSKC aims to achieve the following goals:

Firstly, the PSKC provides data collected by annual surveys, so that the data can be used for the establishment and revision of policies on young children. To do this, in 2010, the PSKC prepared three different reports; a basic analysis report, an in-depth study report, and a project activity report. The basic analysis report on the PSKC 2009: Wave II was published. The report described the results according to the characteristics of the following elements: the general characteristics of the subjects, children’s development, their parents’ role, and the support provided for raising child. The in-depth study was reported using data from the PSKC 2008: Wave 1 and the first in-depth study on child development, attachment security, temperament, and mother’s personality. The project activity report stated the overall research activities of the PSKC 2010. The PSKC 2010 also conducted an additional survey on newly sampled households with a newborn in order to build up horizontal data and to compare with the original household of the PSKC.

Secondly, the PSKC seeks to encourage that professionals in academia and experts with a lot of field experience participate in discussions and researches from different perspectives, using the PSKC data, and to provide the basis for the establishment of nation’s long-term visions and policies on the healthy development of young children as well as child-caring support for families. To this end, research works produced by both domestic and overseas panels were reviewed, colloquiums were held, and consultations were acquired. The findings from these activities were added to the research results of the PSKC and computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) was developed. The PSKC continues editing the data of the PSKC 2010: Wave III, which was carried out through revised CAPI.

Thirdly, by disclosing extensively collected data, publishing reports, releasing documentations, and holding symposiums and conferences, the PSKC aims to lay the foundation work for further advancement of the nation’s policies on child care and education. To achieve this goal, the PSKC released some of the research materials obtained from the PSKC 2008: Wave I for the first conference of the PSKC, held on October 29, 2010. Thirty-six papers on 11 themes prepared by professors and scholars in the area were presented at the conference, including a number of prize-winning papers contributed by graduate students.

Based on the studies and activities conducted in 2010, the PSKC 2011: Wave IV plans to share the longitudinal data from Wave I and II; to analyze the data collected at Wave III; to conduct a survey for Wave IV, expanding the survey to early child care and education centers where the children attend; to manage and track panels; and to hold an international seminar and the second conference of the PSKC in August of 2011.
