This study was due to the view that there have not been enough studies analyzing the kinds of activities that children are actually experiencing in the kindergarten and childcare facilities. For the purpose of the study, we tried to find out the ways in which children grow and develop in the kindergarten and childcare facilities, which are the representative childcare support organizations, by their experiencing various activities from the time of coming to the facilities in the morning to the time of returning home.
As for the contents of the study, we tried to analyze the educational and childcare activities that children are experiencing in the kindergarten and childcare facilities. For this purpose, we observed their various activities such as coming to the facilities, eating meals and snacks, free indoor activities, group activities, free outdoor activities, special activities, taking a nap, transferring activities, activities relating the basic needs of everyday life, returning home, and other activities.
The subjects of the observation were 176 children who attend the 40 facilities including 20 kindergartens and 20 childcare facilities.
In the case of the observation in the kindergarten, the average number of times of observation per each child during a day was approximately 127 for 2.1 hours. As the result of the analysis on the children"s activities in the kindergarten, it was shown that generally the rate of choosing free indoor activities was the highest 32.8%(about 42 times of observation). Following that, the rate of choosing group activities was 25.8%(about 33 times of observation) while the rate of free optional outdoor activities was 4.0%(about 5 times) and the rate of special activities was 3.3%(about 5 times). It was notable that 3-year-old children preferred free indoor activities compared to 5-year-old children.
