Abstract

In order to reduce the burden of child-rearing costs, it is necessary to continuously manage the price of child-related goods and services at national level. Among the married women, the main reason for not having children is that "to be well-off financially" or "economic difficulty in child-rearing" accounts for a high proportion. In other words, it can be seen that the economic aspect of child-rearing, that is, the financial burden of child support is a critical portion for individual households.

This study, therefore, aims to contribute to the stabilization of child-rearing prices by providing the child-rearing price index on child-related goods and services. For this purpose, we, first, calculate the child-rearing price index based on the child-related goods and services out of the goods and services used for calculating the Consumer Price Index of Statistics Korea. Secondly, in particular, as the fifth study in a series of the KICCE Child-rearing Price Index study, we expand the survey area to six metropolitan cities, including previous 11 regions of 25 provinces(Gu) in Seoul. The main results of the analysis are as follows: Based on the 2015 prices with 2016 weights, excluding the dramatic decline of the index between 2013 and 2014, the child-rearing price index is constantly rising. This suggests the necessity to continuously monitor and manage child-rearing prices at the government level.
